I am following the brownfield process. It turns out there is a KB article on what the VSA setup process is referring to when it warns of erasing data:
Existing VMs not stored on the VSA appliances were not harmed by the deployment.

I am trying to find a way to simulate a device status of disconnected in Workstation v.9. I could probably stop/start the network service inside a guest but I'm looking for something more disruptive.
Any suggestions how to do that via the VIX API?
Gary
Hoping to get to 10,000 points this week and with the release of VCHS, I think I can do that pretty easily
Make sure ubuntu has that nic set up and operational and probably you want it to use dhclient to obtain an IP.
If your host machine uses DHCP then your guest should as well. If you manually assign IP addresses for your host machine
you will need to do that in Ubuntu as well. You have to make sure that your router (or what ever) will assign the IP, that it doesn't have some hard coded limit or mac address filtering going on.
Check with ifconfig to make sure that the ubuntu nic has an IPV4 address.
Also in the VM settings, make sure that the Bridged Virtual Nic is set to connect at power on.
Hi
I try to setup a backup solution for two little servers running in ESXi 5.1. (free edition).
I installed and configured the ghettoVCB successfully and everything seemed to be ok.
However, when I start to create a backup, the process would terminate with an error :-(
It does not matter whether the server is on or off, I get the same result.
All datastores are local, 2 x WD500GB with plenty of free space.
There is no snaphot, nothing that could (in my eyes) prevent a proper backup.
The server is running perfectly, when switched on.
I would appreciate any helpful feedback. Thanks in advance! The log is attached.

Welcoome to the Community - You will not be able to add these disk to your ESXi host and access the data - you will have to put them in another machine and share them either with an NFS or CIFS share -
You have two options -
I too get this error with a customer setup. For a long time I suspected that 4 times the total backup (since ghetto doesn't remove the oldest backup until the newest is completed) was too much space for the destination, but that wasn't the case. I'm yet to find out whats causing this. Any pointers appreciated!

WoodyZ nailed it! Thank you...
Just in case this helps others, I was not aware of the machine.vmx file. Further adding to my confusion, was using finder to view the files that were there. With machine.vmwarevm appearing in finder as a non-descript flat file (and being perplex about where the .vmdk file disappeared to), I assumed .vmx in the reference was a type used for ESX or another VMware product. Now that I know, I know!
It is also interesting that the find command (IE find / -name "*.vmx" - print) reports the contents of .vmwarevm "directories".
(It's always the smallest points that derail us.)
